This is the second coin in the Canada Lunar Year series. The Rabbit is a cherished symbol of longevity, abundance and prosperity, and in Chinese folklore, it is the trusted companion of Chang’e (嫦娥), the goddess of the moon. Those born in the year of the Rabbit are typically friendly, outgoing and prefer the company of others. The Rabbit is known for its attention to detail, and in a year associated with the Water element. Rabbits believe strongly in friends and family, and are sophisticated, expressive and well-mannered.
The reverse of the coin is inspired by the Chinese legend of the Moon – Rabbit, and features a gentle and good-natured rabbit jumping over a new crescent moon, which beautifully represents the promise of new beginnings in 2023. All around the reverse, the inscriptions: the Chinese character for “Rabbit”, “CANADA” – the country of issue, “2023” – the year of issue, and “15 DOLLARS” – the face value. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
