First released for 1996, the long-running Australian Lunar Coin Series celebrates the 12 animals of the lunar zodiac. This 2023 coin celebrates the rabbit, whose rule over every fourth year in the 12-year lunar calendar is said to be friendly, outgoing and prefer the company of others. Rabbits believe strongly in friends and family, and are sophisticated, expressive and well-mannered.
The reverse of the coin portrays gilded images of an alert rabbit with ears erect and second rabbit stretching towards a budding branch. Two rabbits are meticulously gilded in 24-carat gold. The design also includes the Chinese character for ‘rabbit’(兔), the inscription ‘RABBIT 2023’, and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, issuing country, weight, purity, and face value.
