The 2013 Perth Mint 1 Kilo Lunar Year of the Snake “Gemstone” Silver Coin is perhaps the most striking of the large coins offered in the Perth Mint’s “ 2013 Lunar Year of the Snake” line. This is the sixth year of Series II in this incredibly popular line of Chinese Lunar Calendar silver bullion coins. Limited to 5,000 coins, this massive 100.60 mm coin is made from 1 kilo (32.15 oz) of .999 fine silver, and each has a black diamond for the eye of the full color snake on reverse. Each coin comes in a red and black presentation box with COA.
People born in the Year of the Snake are intellectual, intuitive and elegant. 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 and 2013 are Years of the Snake. The Snake’s best friends are the Ox, the Rooster and the Dragon. Relations with the Tiger or the Pig are hard to maintain.
The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley right-side effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The weight and purity of “1 KG 999 silver” is the to the left of the date, and the denomination of 30 Dollars is to the right. The reverse features a large yellow and black snake curled over a tree branch, watching the goings-on of the world beneath him. The visible eye of the snake is set with a black diamond, representing Wisdom. The Chinese character for Snake is inscribed below the snake’s head, and the motto “Year of the Snake” is across the bottom of the coin. The Perth Mint mint mark is to the far right, near the snake’s tongue.
