The Royal Mint continues its celebrated Royal Tudor Beasts Collection with the release of the Great Britain 2026 The Royal Tudor Beasts - The Queen's Lion 99.99% Proof Gold Coin 2oz. Struck in 99.99% pure gold to proof standard, this coin honours one of the heraldic beasts that guards the entrance to Hampton Court Palace, the grand Tudor residence of Henry VIII.
The Queen’s Lion was commissioned in 1536 to mark Henry VIII’s marriage to Jane Seymour, his third consort. Proud and commanding, the lion holds a shield bearing Jane Seymour’s personal badge, symbolising her royal authority and the enduring Tudor legacy.
The coin’s reverse features the Queen’s Lion, designed by renowned sculptor and illustrator David Lawrence, depicted in a powerful stance with intricate detail. The shield it supports carries Jane Seymour’s royal badge, connecting the design to Tudor heraldry and dynastic tradition. Surrounding the Queen’s Lion is the inscription “QUEEN’S LION” and “2026”. The obverse depicts Martin Jennings’s effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, surrounded by the inscription “CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D” along with the face value and year of issue.
This release marks the ninth coin in the Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, a series inspired by the heraldic statues that flank the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. Each coin in the series is created in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, bringing history and artistry together to celebrate Tudor symbolism.
