Overview
This coin features Marc Chagall’s 1964 fresco and Jules-Eugène Lenepveu’s 1872 masterpiece, struck in fine silver with a limited mintage of 3,000.

The Monnaie de Paris proudly presents the France 2025 Masterpieces of the Museum - Ceilings of the Palais Garnier 99.9% Coloured Proof Silver Coin 22.2g, a tribute to one of Paris’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of architect Charles Garnier’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the Paris Opera’s inauguration, this release honours the magnificent dual-ceiling of the Palais Garnier.

The obverse of the coin features Marc Chagall’s 1964 fresco, commissioned by André Malraux, which continues to dazzle with its vibrant colours and dedication to 14 great composers. Its lively figures and luminous palette celebrate opera, dance, and the enduring spirit of the Paris Opera. The central medallion, normally hidden by the grand chandelier, is beautifully revealed in this numismatic masterpiece. Around the edge is the inscription: “PLAFOND DU PALAIS GARNIER – MARC CHAGALL – PARIS – 1964” (Ceiling of the Palais Garnier – MARC CHAGALL – PARIS – 1964), honouring both the artist and the work. The reverse highlights Jules-Eugène Lenepveu’s 1872 work “Les Muses et les heures du jour et de la nuit” (The Muses and the Hours of Day and Night), a rich academic painting filled with mythological and temporal symbolism. Surrounding the design are ornate mouldings that replicate the Palais Garnier’s ceiling decorations, with inscriptions naming the artist and the year of creation, and face value.

With a worldwide mintage of only 3,000 pieces, the coin comes presented in elegant packaging with a certificate of authenticity, making it an essential collectible for lovers of fine art, opera, and French cultural history.
