Commemorate a defining moment in Australia’s history with the Australia 2026 Australia's First Gold Rush 175th Anniversary 99.99% Gilded Proof Silver Coin 1oz, an exceptional release from The Perth Mint honouring the origins of the nation’s gold legacy.
In 1851, the discovery of gold at Ophir, New South Wales, by Edward Hargraves ignited Australia’s first official gold rush. This transformative event sparked mass migration, accelerated economic development, and played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s multicultural identity. Marking 175 years since this historic milestone, this coin captures the spirit of ambition, resilience, and opportunity that defined the era.
Struck from 1 troy ounce of 99.99% fine silver in proof quality, the coin is enhanced with 24-carat gold gilding, adding striking contrast and symbolic richness to the design. The reverse features a central map of Australia highlighting Ophir as the birthplace of the gold rush, accompanied by the prominent ‘175’ anniversary mark. Behind the map, a crossed pickaxe and shovel, universally recognised symbols of gold mining, form the core motif. Surrounding elements vividly depict life during the gold rush, including a lantern, a pitched tent, a wheelbarrow of alluvium, a gold panning hand, a bucket, and a cradle box, all set against rugged terrain. The outer rim, map, and mining tools are selectively gilded in gold, enhancing the visual impact and historical symbolism. Encircling the design is the inscription “AUSTRALIA’S FIRST GOLD RUSH”, along with the year of issue and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse bears the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, surrounded by inscriptions denoting “CHARLES III”, the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, country of issue and face value.
With a limited mintage of 5,000 coins worldwide and a stricter issue limit of 4,500, this release is a meaningful collectible for those passionate about Australian history, precious metals, and commemorative coinage.
