The quokka is a small, cat-sized marsupial known for its round ears, dense grey-brown fur, and bright black eyes. Famous for its friendly disposition and characteristic “smiling” expression, the quokka has earned the global nickname “the happiest animal on Earth.” It holds cultural importance for the Noongar people, the Traditional Owners of southwest Australia. While once widespread across the region, habitat loss and predation have limited their population. Today, quokkas are primarily found in Western Australia, most notably on Rottnest Island, a picturesque destination just 18 kilometres off the coast of Perth.
The reverse of the coin features a vibrantly coloured scene of a quokka family standing cheerfully on white sands surrounded by colourful coastal flora.
