Composed of 1 troy ounce of .999 pure silver, each coin arrives in its original Perth Mint capsule for long-term storage and protection. The reverse of each one dollar coin features a hairy-eared portrait of the marsupial. The words AUSTRALIAN KOALA and 2014 1 OZ 999 SILVER are inscribed around the rim. The coin’s obverse includes Ian Rank-Broadley’s Queen Elizabeth design. It is inscribed with the words QUEEN ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and 1 DOLLAR. Closely related to the wombat, the koala’s color ranges from silvery grey to dark brown. The female marsupial carries her young — known as the joey — in an abdominal pouch for six months. The world-famous Australian icon has very few natural predators.
