Overview
This coin celebrates the cultural significance and natural beauty of the kookaburra in Western Australia. Its intricate design is a unique tribute to one of Australia’s most iconic birds.

In the hush of dawn, when the sun's first light kisses the treetops, a familiar song resonates through the eucalyptus grove—a sound that has serenaded this country for centuries. The kookaburra's 'koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa' chorus echoes through the trees, rousing the bush from its slumber. To the Nyoongar people, this is more than just a bird's call; it is a voice that has spoken to their ancestors, a spirit that has passed down their stories and visions through generations. The Nyoongar call the kookaburra 'kaa kaa', a name that reflects the bird's laughing and the joy it brings to the land. As the light climbs higher, the kookaburra's singing merges with the rustle of trees, the hum of insects, and the distant murmur of a river. It is a song about life, resilience, and the land itself, which continues to inspire and resonate.

The coin’s reverse features an original-coloured artwork by Kevin Bynder, a proud Whadjuk Yuet-Ballardong man. Kevin's artwork honours his Nyoongar background while brilliantly capturing the essence of Western Australia's natural environment. His work has received widespread recognition, from Indigenous Guernsey designs for high-profile athletic teams to murals in public and private locations. The kookaburra resting on a branch portrayed on the reverse has markings representing white ochre, a traditional earth colour used by ancestors in the kookaburra Dreaming dance. The background is filled with vivid dots, with blue symbolising the sky throughout the day, green representing the leaves during the Djeran season, and brown signifying the transition between the Kambarang, Birak, and Bunuru seasons. Above the kookaburra is the “2024” year of issue, and at the bottom is the “P125” Perth Mint’s 125th-anniversary mintmark. The coin's obverse depicts His Majesty King Charles III, as portrayed by Dan Thorne, the King’s name, “Charles III”, the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, face value, and the country of issue. Each coin has been painstakingly antiqued, resulting in a unique finish that mimics the sense of an ancient item and distinguishes each piece. The coin is delivered in a modern latex casing within a gorgeously decorated shipper, together with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

The Australia 2024 Kookaburra Kaa Kaa 99.99% Antiqued Coloured Silver Coin 2oz captures the essence and spirit of the kookaburra. With every detail, from the intricate markings on the bird's feathers to the vibrant colours representing the ever-changing skies and seasons, this coin is more than just a piece of silver; it is a story told in metal and art, a tribute to a bird whose laughter is as old as the land itself.
