When Her Majesty The Queen was crowned on 2 June 1953, ten statues were created to form a guard of honour at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. The Queen’s Beasts Coin Collection breathes new life into these mighty creatures that represent the British monarchy.

 

The White Lion of Mortimer is the seventh coin of The Queen’s Beast Series. Designer, Jody Clark has captured the regal fierceness of this majestic creature in the reverse design. The Mortimer Lion is a fascinating heraldic creature that comes to Her Majesty The Queen through her ancestor Edward IV. Edward IV, the first of the Yorkist kings, represents a tumultuous time in England’s history. Notably different than the Lion of England in the absence of a crown, the White Lion of Mortimer stands behind a shield bearing a combination of two heraldic badges that were often used by Edward IV and his supporters. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of beloved British Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
