When Her Majesty The Queen was crowned on 2 June 1953, ten statues were created to form a guard of honour at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. The Queen’s Beasts Coin Collection breathes new life into these mighty creatures that represent the British monarchy.
The Falcon of the Plantagenets came to The Queen through Edward IV. It was widely used by Edward IV, often in the form shown on the shield. The shield in the grasp of the larger Falcon also shows a smaller falcon atop a golden fetterlock, which is partially open. This depicts Edward's claim to the English throne. The Falcon was later adopted by Henry VIII and established as a royal beast during the reign of Elizabeth I.
Designer, Jody Clark features the Falcon of the Plantagenets. With a keen eye and unrivalled speed, the falcon is one of nature’s most impressive beasts. Featuring a secure chainmail background, the realism of the Falcon of the Plantagenets is displayed to its fullest. The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of beloved British Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
