William Wyon is regarded as one of history’s great coin designers, his reputation forever linked to the reign of Queen Victoria. In 1846 he was commissioned to produce a portrait of Queen Victoria for a new coin celebrating the 10th anniversary of Victoria’ s coronation. Heavily influenced by the 19th Century Gothic Revival, Wyon, with the aid of Scottish artist William Dyce, was up to the challenge and a silver crown was released with a new portrait. It became known as the ‘Gothic Crown’ coin.

In honor of this historical coin, East India Company features the Gothic Crown design for the 3rd release of their popular Masterpiece Collection. The reverse of the coin features the beautiful cruciform image originally created by William Dyce. Four shields displaying the royal arms of the nations of the United Kingdom surround the arms of Order of the Garter. Each quarter is decorated with the floral symbols representing England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The reverse also includes the wordings “tueatur unita deus anno dom mdcccxlvii”. This translates to “May God guard these United Kingdoms, Year of Our Lord 1847. This style of lettering is known as “Blackletter” or “Gothic”. It is designed to evoke a bygone era. The obverse depicts the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and face value.
