First released for 1996, the long-running Australian Lunar Coin Series celebrates the 12 animals of the lunar zodiac. This 2024 coin celebrates the dragon which holds the fifth position among the 12-year lunar calendar is said for their powerful leadership, creativity and decision-making abilities. They possess the capacity to remain calm under pressure, make correct judgments and exhibit curiosity towards various aspects of life.

The reverse side of the silver coin depicts a spirited dragon rising majestically from the waves, unleashing powerful streams of water, accompanied by a flame-imbued pearl. Dragon symbolises auspiciousness. According to legend, dragons hold dominion over water along with the ability to summon storms and dispel evil. The design also includes the Chinese character for ‘dragon’(龍), the inscription ‘DRAGON 2024’ and the 'P125' mintmark honouring The Perth Mint's 125th anniversary. The obverse depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, issuing country, weight, purity and face value.
