According to Chinese mythology, the order of the animals in the ancient zodiac calendar was decided with a great race across a river. The rat is one of 12 animals that participated in the Great Race and it leapt onto the riverbank first by tricking his neighbour, the cat, before hitching a ride on the back of the ox. The rat won the race finally and The Year of the Rat is the first on the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
