The American Silver Eagle coin was first released by the United States Mint in 1986. It is an iconic design that is recognized around the world.
In 2021, the U.S. Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program with a refreshed design. The coin’s obverse uses the “Walking Liberty” design by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. Liberty walks in profile, draped in the folds of the American flag. Her right arm is extended and she carries laurel and oak branches in her left. With the technological advancements in the design and minting process, the design now encompasses some of Weinman’s original details that were not previously possible. The new reverse design depicts a single eagle coming in for a landing, carrying an oak branch as if to add it to a nest.
