This incredible figure 8-shaped is powerful yet beautiful. This coin depicts a dragon encircling one hole of the “8” and a tiger curving around the other to create a striking “Yin” and “Yang” depiction of harmony in traditional Chinese culture.
The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, wealth and good fortune. The tiger is known as the king of all beasts and is a symbol of strength and bravery. According to ancient Chinese Taoist philosophy, the tiger and dragon are ancient symbols of “Yin” and “Yang”, forces that combine to make up the universe. The number “8” is considered to be lucky in Chinese culture, also symbolizes balance and wholeness. To emphasize this, the octagon “Ba Gua”(八卦) symbol used in Taoist practice is included within this piece as holds of the figure 8. The high relief deep 3D details show the body of the dragon and tiger circling around them, make it the perfect pairing of the two creatures look alive.
The reverse of the coin features a dragon and a tiger encircling their bodies around the figure “8”. On the obverse, it displays a small portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Also included the issuing authority, date of issue and face value.
