The Ancient City of Pingyao was once a financial centre for the whole of China from the 19th century to the early 20th century and is considered the birthplace of China’s banking industry. Founded in the 14th century and located in central Shanxi Province, Pingyao was a globally important ancient city which includes three sections: The entire area within the walls of Pingyao, Shuanglin Temple six kilometres southwest of the county seat, and Zhenguo Temple.
Pingyao’s old town is typically considered the best ancient walled city in China. Its 225 hectares is a complete building complex including ancient walls, streets and lanes, shops, dwellings, and temples. The Ancient City of Pingyao was listed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1997.
The obverse of silver coin features the architectural design of Yingxun Gate which is the southern city gate of the Ancient City of Ping Yao, title of PRC and the year date. The reverse depicts the statue of Skanda in Shuanglin Temple, against the architectural design of the Hall of Heavenly Kings, and the words “the Ancient City of Ping Yao” in Chinese and the face value.
