Wulingyuan is in the Wuling Mountains, the northwestern part of Hunan Province, China. It is composed of three distinctive scenic spots: Zhangjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and Suoxiyu. On 7th September 1992, Wulingyuan Scenic Spot was listed by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site. Wulingyuan is known for five unmatched beauties: its exotic peaks, its unusually shaped stones, its deep and secluded ravines, its waters, and its limestone caves. Besides the natural scenery, the Wulingyuan area is also inhabited by the Tujia, Bai, Miao, and other minorities, and their houses and terraced fields look like decorations on the green mountain.
To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Wulingyuan Scenic Area as a World Natural Heritage Site, and to develop China’s tourism industry, the People’s Bank of China issued the first set of World Heritage - Wulingyuan Commemorative Coin on September 19, 2003. The obverse of two coins depicts the traditional residential building of Tujia Nationality, the title of PRS and the year date. The reverse of one silver coin features the hand-waving dance of Tujia Nationality, the words " Tujia nationality" in Chinese and the face value. The reverse of another silver coin features the scenery of Yubi Peak in Wulingyuan, the words “World Heritage Wulingyuan – Yubi Peak” in Chinese and the face value.
