Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series III collection continues the rich tradition of minting spectacular bullion coins by portraying animal themes from the Chinese Lunar calendar. This beautiful antiqued silver coin is the third release of the Series, celebrating the Year of the Tiger.
The tiger is known as the king of beasts in China, taking a similar symbolic representation to the lion in the West. Those born under the influence of Tiger are said to be natural leaders, blessed with courage, charm, and confidence. Tigers are seen as guardians of children in Chinese culture and are a symbol of bravery.
The coin’s reverse portrays a tiger cub following its proud and protective parent across a rocky terrain featuring ferns and bamboo, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark is also incorporated into the design. The obverse of the coin depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the weight and fineness, and the monetary denomination. The surface of the coin has been ‘antiqued’ by hand to give it a unique finish conveying the abrasions of an ancient artefact.
