This beautiful silver coin is the second release of the well-renowned Australian Lunar Series III, celebrating the Year of the Ox.
According to Chinese mythology, the order of the animals in the ancient zodiac calendar was decided with a great race across a river. The ox is one of 12 animals that participated in the Great Race and it finished second. The ox has subsequently ‘ruled’ every second year in the 12-year lunar cycle. Those born under the influence of ox are said to be kind, intelligent, hardworking, calm, honest and reliable.
The coin’s reverse portrays an ox with its calf under the branch of a cherry blossom as a quiet farming village is featured in the background. The design also includes the Chinese character for "ox" and the inscription "OX 2021". The obverse of the coin depicts the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the weight and fineness, and the monetary denomination. The surface of the coin has been ‘antiqued’ by hand to give it a unique finish conveying the abrasions of an ancient artefact.
