Of all the traditional festivals in the Chinese Culture, the Lunar New Year is the most important. The first day of the New Year symbolizes the beginning of another year and all things start a new chapter. The origin of twelve lunar animals is a mystery. Chinese legend has it that the order of twelve animals in Lunar calendar was decided with a great race across a river.
This exception set of Hong Kong Lunar Series Proof Medals set was issued by The Royal Mint with its impeccable craftmanship. The design is full of auspicious meaning. The full set contains 12 coins, dated from 1995-2006. Each medal celebrates a different Chinese zodiac sign, with each cycle lasting 12 years. The obverse of gold medals features various lunar animal designs by year. The reverse of 1996-1999 medals features the official Hong Kong Victorian seal, the emblem of power and successful trade, created by the decree of Queen Victoria in 1842. From 2002, the reverse design changed to the landmark view of Victoria Harbour from the Peak, with the inscription “Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” in English and Chinese and a blooming Bauhinia, the city’s floral emblem, symbolising Hong Kong’s bright future.
