At 8013 meters the Shishapangma is the lowest eight-thousander and therefore, the fourteenth highest mountain worldwide.
This 2014 Palau Colorized Proof Shishapangma features a stark image of the mountain on the reverse. The design clearly brings out the sharp face of the mountain, while also clearly depicting areas that are covered in snow and ice. In the lower right are colorized pink flowers that are native to the region. On the left, the name of the mountain and its elevation are identified with the inscription “SHISHAPANGMA 8013 M.” At the bottom is a ribbon that bears the inscription of the mintage year, “2014,” and the name of the series of which the coin is a part, “MOUNTAINS & FLORA,” is inscribed along the rim at the top.
On the reverse is a shield with a variety of imagery. At the center is Neptune, who holds his trident in his left hand. His right hand touches the top of an open treasure chest, which is located to his right. On his left is a seated mermaid whose tail extends behind her. Under the image are the words “RAINBOW’S END.” Above the shield is an outrigger canoe, a popular means of transportation in the island nation, being rowed by a seated individual. The name of the country that issued the coin, “REPUBLIC OF PALAU,” is inscribed at the top. On either side of that inscription are three stars, which are followed down the rim by two lines. Between those two lines at the bottom is an inscription of the coin’s face value, “5$.”
