This 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage Proof Silver Coin and Medal Set from The Royal Mint and the United States Mint features an exquisite one-ounce silver coin and medal with designs telling the complex narrative of the Mayflower’s story from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
The story of the Mayflower is one that connects two continents, with most of the passengers having come from England, hoping to start a new life on the other side of the Atlantic. However, the Mayflower had to cross the Atlantic at the height of storm season and the journey was horribly unpleasant. After 66 days, the ship finally reached the New World. In order to establish themselves as a legitimate colony, they sign a document called “Mayflower Compact” to establish self-government in the New World and this early attempt at democracy set the stage for future colonists seeking independence from the British. The Mayflower Compact, as it was known, would ultimately inspire the United States Constitution.
The reverse of silver coin from Royal Mint depicts the Mayflower sailing through the rough seas to represent the unwavering determination of the passengers and crew. Inscriptions "1620", "2020" and "MAYFLOWER" are included. The obverse bears fifth portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
The US Mint silver medal reverse is a Wampanoag man and woman employing a planting technique of their people. Inscriptions "SUSTAINERS OF LIFE" and "PEOPLE OF THE DAWN" are included. The obverse is a depiction of a Mayflower family bracing against the cold and windy weather with the ship anchored in the harbor. A pair of mayflower blossoms flank the design. Inscriptions "A CIVIL BODY POLITICK" "1620-2020," and "MAYFLOWER COMPACT” are included.
